Hotlinking is a largely accepted Internet term for linking to another website’s images. Quite simply, if you develop an Internet site, another person may want to use the images you have and instead of downloading them from your Internet site and then uploading them to their own Internet site, they may simply put links to your website. This way, every time a visitor opens their Internet site, the images will be loaded from your account, hence stealing from your own monthly traffic quota, let alone the copyright issues which may present themselves or that somebody can be trying to deceive people into believing that they're actually on your website. In rare instances, documents and other types of files can also be linked in the exact same way. To prevent this from happening and to avoid this sort of situations, you could activate hotlink protection for your Internet site.
Hotlinking Protection in Shared Hosting
You can easily protect your content if you generate an .htaccess file in the website’s root folder, but just in case you don't have previous experience, you could use our hotlink protection tool. The latter is included with all shared hosting
plans that we offer and could be accessed through the in-house built Hepsia CP. The protection could be turned on in two basic steps - pick the domain or subdomain for the website in question, then pick if our system should set up the .htaccess file inside the main folder or in a subfolder and you will be ready. You do not need any coding expertise or any experience with this kind of matters, because there shall be nothing else to do. If you wish to remove the protection at some time, you will be able to see all the Internet sites that are protected within the same exact section of the Control Panel with a Delete button alongside each of them.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you don't want other individuals to use your images on their Internet sites without your authorization, you could easily switch on the hotlink protection function, that's supplied with all semi-dedicated server
package deals. Rather than creating an .htaccess file by hand in the Internet site folder and writing some code in it, which is the common approach to deny direct linking to files, you may use an exceptionally simple tool, which we've incorporated into the Hepsia CP. With it, you'll only have to select the Internet site which needs to be protected and our system shall do the rest. Optionally, you can make a decision if the .htaccess file will be created straight inside the root folder or inside a subfolder, in case you would like to switch on the hotlink security function only for some content and not for the whole Internet site. Disabling it is just as effortless - you'll simply need to mark the checkbox next to the specific Internet site and to click on the Delete button.
